$54.2M project to twin Ray Gibbon Drive in St. Albert, Alta. gets go-ahead after cost sharing deal

EDMONTON—The Alberta government and a city northwest of Edmonton have struck a cost sharing agreement for an eight-kilometre twinning project.

The province and St. Albert, Alta. finalized plans Feb. 25 to twin Ray Gibbon Drive, which is currently a busy two-lane route that connects the city with Edmonton’s ring road, Anthony Henday Drive. The province and city will evenly split design and construction costs expected to tally $54.2 million.

Design work for the eight-kilometre twinning project is expected to start this year, with the start of construction following in 2020.

The province said more than 20,000 cars currently use Ray Gibbon Drive each day and the Edmonton Metropolitan Region Board had marked the project as a priority.

The roadwork will create 152 jobs.
